You’re not alone in your struggle to stop snoring.
Snoring affects about 67% of adults. Conservatively estimated, that is 154 million people in the US who snore every night.
Snoring can disrupt sleep for both you and your sleeping partner and can lead to health problems.
It’s important to eliminate snoring so both of you can sleep restfully and maintain good health.
Snoring is the harsh sound that occurs when the tissue at the back of the roof of the mouth (soft palate and uvula) vibrate against the back of the throat or tongue.
As you fall asleep, the tissues and muscles in the tongue and throat all relax, allowing the tongue to drop back into the airway and narrowing the space for air. Air passing through the narrowed airway moves faster, causing the tissues to vibrate against each other and creates a rattling or snoring sound. The narrower the air passage becomes the louder the snoring becomes.
Snoring is an indication of abnormal breathing during sleep and may be an indication of a bigger health problem, sleep apnea.
Research studies indicate that 60% of all snorers will snore only, or most often, while sleeping on their back. In this position, gravity pulls the jaw and tongue down and back. This causes the mouth to open and the tongue to drop back into the airway and leads to narrowing of the air passage and an increase in snoring.
